What is Citicoline?
Citicoline is a nutritional supplement, a source of choline and cytidine, and has potential neuroprotective and nootropic activities. Citicoline, also known as cytidine-5-diphosphate choline or CDP-choline, is hydrolyzed into cytidine and choline in the intestine. After absorption, cytidine and choline are dispersed, used in various biosynthetic pathways, and cross the blood-brain barrier to re-synthesize citicoline in the brain, which is the rate-limiting product of phosphatidylcholine synthesis. This drug also increases acetylcholine (Ach), norepinephrine (NE), and dopamine levels in the central nervous system (CNS). In addition, citicoline participates in the preservation of sphingomyelin and cardiolipin and the recovery of Na+/K+-ATPase activity. Citicoline also increases glutathione synthesis and glutathione reductase activity and exerts an anti-apoptotic effect.

Studies have shown that CDP-choline supplements increase dopamine receptor density. Intraventricular administration of citicoline has also been shown to increase ACTH independently of CRH levels and amplify the release of other HPA axis hormones, such as LH, FSH, GH, and TSH, in response to hypothalamic releasing factors. These effects on HPA hormone levels may be beneficial for some people, but they may have adverse effects on those with ACTH or cortisol hypersecretion disorders (including PCOS, type 2 diabetes, and major depression).

Benefits
Citicoline can be taken orally or injected to help memory loss caused by aging, improve the vision of glaucoma patients, and help stroke patients recover. It is also used to treat Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, bipolar disorder, lazy eye, and other brain diseases.

Side effects
Most people who take citicoline by mouth do not experience side effects. However, some people may experience side effects such as trouble sleeping (insomnia), headache, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, blurred vision, chest pain, etc.

Application
It is mainly used for metabolic disorders, consciousness disorders, tremor paralysis, neurological deafness and tinnitus, and sleeping pill poisoning after head injury and brain surgery. It also has a good effect on Parkinson’s syndrome, cerebral thrombosis, and hemiplegia.
