What is Coluracetam?
Coluracetam (INN) (code-named BCI-540; formerly MKC-231) is a nootropic agent of the racetam family. And 9-amino-tetrahydroacridine family of biological heterogeneous substances. It was originally developed and tested by Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharmaceutical Company for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. After the drug failed to reach the endpoint in its clinical trials, it was licensed by BrainCells Inc to investigate Major Depression (MDD) and previously received a “Qualified Treatment Discovery Program Grant” from the State of California. The results of phase IIa clinical trials indicate that it may be a potential drug for the treatment of MDD with a generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). It may also have potential applications in the prevention and treatment of ischemic retinopathy and retinal and optic nerve damage.
Coluracetam has been shown to reverse the loss of choline acetyltransferase production in the medial septal nucleus of rats exposed to phencyclidine (PCP) and is considered a potential treatment for schizophrenia.
