What is Galantamine Hydrobromide?
Galantamine hydrobromide is the hydrobromide form of galantamine, which is a tertiary alkaloid, synthesized or naturally obtained from the bulbs and flowers of narcissus and several other genera of the Amaryllidaceae , Has anti-cholinesterase and neurocognitive enhancement activity. Galantamine competitively and reversibly inhibits acetylcholinesterase, thereby increasing the concentration of acetylcholine (Ach) and enhancing its effect. In addition, galantamine is a ligand for nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which can increase the presynaptic release of acetylcholine and activate postsynaptic receptors. This drug can improve the neurocognitive function of mild and moderate Alzheimer’s disease, and can reduce the cognitive symptoms induced by alcohol withdrawal that promote the relapse of smoking.
Galantamine is used to treat mild to moderate disturbance of consciousness (dementia) associated with Alzheimer’s disease. It cannot cure Alzheimer’s disease, but it can improve memory, consciousness, and the ability to perform daily functions.
