What is Unifiram?
Unifiram (development code DM-232) is an experimental drug. It has anti-amnestic and other effects in animal research, and its efficacy is much higher than that of piracetam. Many related compounds are known, such as sunifiram (DM-235) and sapunifiram (MN-19). Unifiram has two enantiomers, the dextrorotatory isomer is the more active isomer. It has been shown to reduce the duration of hypnosis caused by pentobarbital without compromising motor coordination. As of 2015, no formal human studies have been conducted on Unifiram. Unifiram is not patented, and despite the lack of research on humans and long-term toxicity, it is usually sold online.
Pharmacology
Unifiram and sunifiram have been tested at a wide range of sites, including the most important receptors, ion channels, and transporters, but they have no affinity for any site. They especially do not bind to glutamate, GABA, serotonin, dopamine, adrenergic, histamine, acetylcholine or opioid receptors at concentrations up to 1 μM. In addition, these drugs were tested on recombinant AMPA receptors and showed no enhancement of the receptor, indicating that they cannot act as positive allosteric modulators of AMPA receptors. However, they were able to prevent amnesia caused by the AMPA receptor antagonist NBQX in the passive avoidance test, which suggests that indirect/downstream AMPA receptor activation may be related to their memory enhancement effects.
Side effects
Due to the lack of human studies, it is difficult to determine whether it has any side effects and what they are.
